Mastering Ordered Lists

Mastering Ordered Lists

In Content Manager, an "Ordered List" isn't just a 1-2-3 list of text; it is a tool that pulls in other pieces of content (like News, Events, or Fragments) and displays them in a specific order.

Here is an article you can add to your playbook to help users understand this more advanced feature.

🏗️ Mastering Ordered Lists

Ordered Lists are "content aggregators." Instead of manually typing out a list of links every time you update your site, you can create a list once and tell it exactly which items to display.

1. What is an Ordered List?

In Content Manager, an Ordered List is a collection of items—such as News posts, Events, or Fragments—that you want to group together.

  • Dynamic Updates: When you add a new item to a list, every page using that list updates automatically.

  • Manual Control: Unlike a search result, you have total control over the order of the items in the list.

2. How to Use Them on a Page

Once a list is created in the Ordered Lists section of the sidebar, you can display it on any page:

  • The "Ordered List" Field: At the bottom of the Page Editor, there is a specific field to select an existing Ordered List.

  • Sidebar Resources: Use these lists to create "Quick Links" or "Related Resources" sidebars that appear next to your main content.

3. Common Use Cases

  • Featured News: Create a list called "Top Stories" and pick the three most important News posts to display on your homepage.

  • Document Groups: Group several Document Links (like "Registration Forms") into one list so they always stay together.

  • Staff Favorites: Use a list of Fragments to display a row of "Teacher Spotlights" that you can rotate monthly.

💡 Pro-Tip: The "Set and Forget" Method

If you have a "Monthly Newsletter" section on your homepage, link it to an Ordered List. When the new month arrives, simply add the new News post to the list and remove the old one. You won't have to touch the homepage layout at all!
